Grafik Tasarımcı Adaylarının Mesleki Etik Farkındalıkları Üzerine Nitel Bir Araştırma

Öz

Bu araştırmanın amacı, mesleki etik derslerinin müfredatta sınırlı düzeyde yer aldığı belirlenen grafik tasarım bölümü öğrencilerinin mesleki etik farkındalıklarının hangi düzeyde ve niteliklerde olduğunun araştırılmasıdır. Nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olgubilim ile tasarlanan bu çalışma, amaçlı örnekleme yoluyla seçilen Türkiye'nin beş farklı coğrafi bölgesindeki devlet üniversitelerinde öğrenim gören toplam 25 grafik tasarım bölümü dördüncü sınıf öğrencisi ile yürütülmüştür. Veriler yüz yüze yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler aracılığıyla toplanmış ve içerik analizi yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Araştırmanın bulguları, grafik tasarımcı adaylarının etik kavramına ilişkin genel bir farkındalığa sahip olmakla birlikte bu farkındalığı mesleki uygulamalara aktaramadıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Özellikle öğrencilerin telif hakları, font lisansları, özgün tasarım ve yasal sorumluluklar gibi konularda belirgin bilgi eksikliklerine sahip olduğu; FSEK ve intihal kavramı hakkındaki farkındalıklarının son derece sınırlı kaldığı tespit edilmiştir. Buna karşın katılımcıların büyük çoğunluğu grafik tasarım programlarına etik dersinin dahil edilmesi gerektiğini ifade etmiştir. Bu bulgular bir bütün olarak değerlendirildiğinde, grafik tasarım eğitiminde etik öğretiminin sistematik biçimde güçlendirilmesinin önemli bir gereklilik olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Qualitative Study on the Professional Ethics Awareness of Graphic Design Students

Öz

The aim of this study is to investigate the level and characteristics of the professional ethics awareness of students enrolled in graphic design departments, in which professional ethics courses have been found to occupy a limited place in the curriculum. Designed as a phenomenological study, one of the qualitative research designs, the research was conducted with a total of 25 fourth-year graphic design students selected through purposive sampling from state universities located in five different geographical regions of Türkiye. The data were collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews and analysed by means of content analysis. The findings revealed that, although prospective graphic designers possess a general awareness of the concept of ethics, they are unable to transfer this awareness to professional practice. In particular, it was determined that the students have marked deficiencies in knowledge concerning such matters as copyright, font licensing, original design and legal responsibilities, and that their awareness of the Law on Intellectual and Artistic Works (FSEK) and of the concept of plagiarism remains extremely limited. By contrast, the great majority of the participants stated that an ethics course should be incorporated into graphic design programmes. Considered as a whole, these findings lead to the conclusion that systematically strengthening the teaching of ethics in graphic design education constitutes an important necessity.

For the thesis titled “An Examination of Prospective Graphic Designers’ Awareness of the Ethical Principles of Graphic Design,” which is being prepared by Ömer ERDEM, a master’s student with thesis in the Department of Art and Design, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Birnur ERALDEMİR, and which was submitted to our Committee by the Directorate of the Institute of Social Sciences, it has been unanimously decided to issue an “Ethics Committee Approval Certificate” regarding the two separate sets of questions and the questionnaire planned to be administered to fourth-year students and faculty members of the Graphic Design departments of Fine Arts Faculties at several universities.
