‘Ā’isha Al-Taymūriyya: A Turkish Poetess Who Inspired The Feminist Movement İn Egypt
Abstract
‘Ā’isha al-Taymūriyya (1256-1320/1840-1902) was a poetess and prose writer of Turkish and Circassian origin who was born in Egypt. She was also one of the last representatives of the former Ottoman multiculturalism in Egypt. al-Taymūriyya’s importance in modern Arabic literature stems mainly from her relationship with feminism. She was considered a source of inspiration for Egyptian women poets and writers and an important pioneer in the development of the feminist movement. al-Taymūriyya has made important contributions to the emergence, development, and prestige of the feminist movement both in Arabic literature and in the contemporary Arab world. The fact that she pioneered the emergence and development of feminist ideas in her lifetime made the poetess a concrete representative of an abstract idea. In this study, al-Taymūriyya’s life and literary works have been scientifically analyzed in the context of feminism. Since her childhood years had a profound impact on her view of feminism, only the events that inspired her first feminist ideas were mentioned while informing about her life. After the examination of her poetry, a long poem in which she expressed some of her ideas on women’s rights was translated into Turkish and analyzed.
