The Juvenilia of a Mawlawi Sheikh: Midhat Bahari and His Work Titled Ravza
Öz
Ahmed Midhat Bahari Beytur (1878–1971) was one of the prominent representatives of the late Ottoman and early Republican intellectual and literary milieu. As a poet, translator, Mathnawi commentator, and Mawlawi sheikh, he produced numerous works on Mawlānā Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī, Mawlawi culture, Sufism, ethics, and literature. Despite the scholarly interest shown in some of his later writings, his first published work, Ravza (1896), has remained largely neglected. This article aims to fill this gap by presenting a comprehensive evaluation of the work’s content together with its transcription into the modern Turkish alphabet. In addition, the study offers a systematic overview of Midhat Bahari’s life and works in order to situate Ravza within the broader context of his intellectual and literary development.
The article is based on biographical, bibliographical, and textual analysis. First, available sources concerning Midhat Bahari’s life are examined and brought together in a coherent narrative. Particular attention is paid to his education in the “Bahariye Mevlevihanesi”, his intellectual formation under prominent Mawlawi figures, his literary activities, and his position as the last sheikh appointed by the Chalabi authority. Subsequently, his published and unpublished works are reviewed chronologically, allowing a clearer understanding of the evolution of his scholarly and literary interests.
The central focus of the study is Ravza, a twenty-nine-page booklet written and published when the author was not yet twenty years old. Although modest in size, the work provides valuable evidence regarding the educational ideals, literary tastes, moral concerns, and spiritual outlook of an emerging Ottoman intellectual. The analysis demonstrates that Ravza is not a unified treatise but rather a compilation of essays, reflections, moral advice, literary passages, quotations, and letters brought together around a common ethical and educational purpose.
Thematic examination reveals that the work is primarily concerned with religious devotion, moral cultivation, learning, diligence, and contemplation. The opening sections are devoted to the idea of divine unity (tawḥīd) and incorporate quotations from Turkish, Persian, and Arabic literary traditions. Other sections emphasize the importance of knowledge, perseverance, humility, and virtuous conduct, while presenting education as the principal means of personal and social advancement. Nature descriptions occupy a significant place in the work and are employed not merely for aesthetic purposes but as instruments of spiritual reflection and moral instruction. The final part consists of several letters that provide insight into the author’s literary sensibility and social relationships during his youth.
The findings indicate that many of the themes that would later characterize Midhat Bahari’s mature writings—especially his commitment to Mawlawi spirituality, ethical instruction, and literary refinement—are already visible in Ravza. Consequently, the work should be regarded not simply as a youthful literary experiment but as an important source for understanding the intellectual formation of a distinguished Mawlawi figure and, more broadly, the cultural and moral world of the late Ottoman period.
