A Mediterranean Hermit: Simeon the Stylite

Abstract

There is several ways for religious life in Christianity. The asceticism is one of them. Meanwhile, asceticism has been understood and lived in a diverse manner. Throughout the entire life, to stand on the top of a pillar was a very interesting method for an ascetic life. In this article, it has been dealt with the life of St. Simeon the Stylite, his activities, and why he could choose this type of way as a mystical expression.

Öz

Hıristiyanlıkta dini yaşamın birçok şekli bulunmaktadır. Asketizm bunlardan biridir. Bununla birlikte asketizm de çok farklı şekillerde anlaşılmış ve yaşanmıştır. Bir ömür boyu bir sütunun üstünde durmak, asketik bir yaşam için çok ilginç bir metottur. Bu makalede Aziz Simeon’un hayatı, faaliyetleri ve mistik bir yaşam biçimi olarak niçin böyle bir yolu seçmiş olabileceği ele alınmaktadır.
