Threat as an Act and Utterance

Abstract

Threat is not only a subject of crime or a notification of a future danger or harm, but also a common and effective speech act within the scope of social relations. Despite this, there is no study focusing on the concept of threat in the linguistics literature of the Turkish language. For this reason, threat, which directs will and behaviour through intimidation, is approached from the perspectives of pragmatics and forensic linguistics. The factors that make threat a threat and also cause it to be characterised as a crime committed through language are emphasised. The samples analysed show that it is not possible to identify an utterance as a threat without any situational context. Considering the criticisms in the literature that the context is often ignored in linguistic studies, the findings highlighting the need for further attention to the issue are presented alongside the discussion.

Edim ve Söz Olarak Tehdit

Öz

Tehdit yalnızca bir suç konusu veya gelecekte meydana gelecek bir tehlike ya da zararın bildirimi değil, aynı zamanda toplumsal ilişkiler kapsamında yaygın ve etkili bir sözeylemdir. Buna rağmen Türkçe dilbilim yazınında tehdit kavramını odağına alan bir çalışmaya rastlanmamıştır. Bu nedenle, korkutma yoluyla irade ve davranışı yönlendiren tehdide edimbilim ve adli dilbilimin bakış açılarıyla yaklaşılmış; tehdidi tehdit yapan ve ayrıca onu dil yoluyla işlenen bir suç olarak nitelemeye neden olan etmenler üzerinde durulmuştur. Çözümlemesine yer verilen örnekler, herhangi bir durum bağlamı olmaksızın bir sözü tehdit olarak tespit etmenin mümkün olmadığını göstermiştir. Dilbilimsel çalışmalarda genellikle gözardı edildiğine yönelik yazındaki eleştiriler de dikkate alındığında, bağlam konusu üzerine daha fazla eğilmeyi gerekli gösteren bulgular tartışmayla birlikte sunulmuştur.
