The Sociological Relevance of Values

Öz

For a long time values have been neglected under the influence of a positivist perception understanding, as something that solely expresses an individual reality, and that is of a subjective nature. But recently in sociological literature values have been focused on. It is well-known that all social structures are composed of fundamental social institutions that involves several values. Furthermore, individuals cannot control the sources of social values that are external to them. If the individuals in a society do not own several ideals and beliefs, the constitution of norms also becomes impossible. Moreover, the values never constitute a cognitive category by themselves, since they are related to values in other spheres. For the most part, values fullfill the role of independent variable in personal behaviors. In the case of a person who helping the poor, for example such action may not be motivated just by a feeling of religious duty. The study of such a behavior can also give us a map of the functioning of the sets of values.

Sosyolojik Bir Olgu Olarak Değer

Öz

Değerler pozitivist anlayışın etkisinde uzun yıllar salt bireysel gerçekliği ifade ettiği ve öznel bir karaktere sahip olduğu gerekçesi ile sosyolojik incelemelerin kapsamı dışında tutuldu. Fakat son yıllarda "değer" konusu sosyolojinin temel inceleme alanı içine girdi. Bilindiği gibi toplumsal yapıyı oluşturan temel toplumsal kurumların tümü kendine ait değerler içermektedir. Ayrıca bir toplumdaki değerlerin kaynağı kişinin dışındadır ve kişi bunları kontrol edemez. Bir toplumdaki bireyler çeşitli ideallere, inançlara sahip olmasalardı o toplumda çeşitli normların oluşması da mümkün olamayacaktı. Bunun yanında değerler, hiçbir zaman kendi başlarına bir bilişsel kategori oluşturmazlar ve bunlar başka alanlardaki değerlerle ilişkilidirler. Çoğu kez de değerler kişilerin davranışlarında birer bağımsız değişken rolü oynarlar. Bir fakire yardım eden kişinin durumuna baktığımızda, kişi bunu sadece dinî bir görev olarak yapmayabilir. Aynı zamanda bu davranış o kişinin insanî değerleri konusunda da bize bilgi verir. Makalede değer kavramı, sosyoloji literatürü temelinden hareketle, yaklaşımlar ve süreç içerisinde geçirdiği dönemeçler tanıtılıp değerlendirilerek ele alınmıştır.
