Parental Behaviors and Educational Levels in Relation to Children’s Perceptual Skills: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to examine the perceptual skills of children in middle childhood depending on parental behaviours. The study group consisted of parents of children attending public primary schools affiliated with the Kırklareli Provincial Directorate of National Education during the 2022–2023 academic year. A total of 470 parents voluntarily participated in the research. In the data collection process, “Demographic Information Form” was used to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of the children, “ALABAMA Parenting Questionnaire” was used to determine parental behaviours and "Perceptual Skills Scale" was used to evaluate the perceptual skills of the children. The findings revealed that parental involvement and positive parenting behaviors supported the development of children's perceptual skills, whereas poor monitoring, inconsistent discipline, and punishment were negatively associated with these skills. In addition, the educational level of parents was found to be significantly related to both their approaches toward their children and the children’s perceptual skill levels (p<0.01, p<0.05). The results indicate that parents’ positive behaviors and the increased monitoring of their children’s behaviors support the development of perceptual skills.
