Development and Evaluation of a Board Game for Curriculum Development in Preservice Teacher Education

Öz

This study reports the development and evaluation of a board game designed for use in an undergraduate Curriculum Development course in preservice teacher education. The board game was developed as a structured classroom activity to support the review and discussion of key curriculum concepts. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining a one-group pretest–posttest quantitative design with a supplementary qualitative component, and involved 39 third-year pre-service teachers enrolled in the Fine Arts Education program. Data were collected using a Curriculum Knowledge Test, the Curriculum Literacy Scale, the Flow Experience Scale for Educational Games, and an open-ended question addressing participants’ views of the game. Quantitative data were analyzed through paired-samples t-tests, effect size calculations, and descriptive statistics, while qualitative responses were examined using content analysis. Pre-post comparisons indicated higher posttest scores in curriculum knowledge and curriculum literacy. Descriptive findings also suggested a relatively high level of overall flow during gameplay. In addition, participants described the board game as engaging, motivating, and helpful for revisiting and reinforcing theoretical content. Overall, the findings suggest that the board game offered a useful post-instructional learning experience and may serve as a supportive classroom resource in curriculum development teaching.
