The 21st century is an age in which freedoms are constantly and unlimitedly expanding. There has been an increasing freedom of choice in almost every area of life, from health to shopping, from education to politics. This study examines a freedom that we see traces of in practical life, although not officially, in Turkey, in the context of increasing freedom for everyone: The freedom to choose teachers. In this study, which examined parents’ preferences for teacher characteristics, three basic questions were addressed. First, how effective are the teacher’s professional characteristics in parents’ teacher preference? Secondly, how effective are the teacher’s personal characteristics in parents’ teacher preference? Third, what are the three teacher characteristics that parents attach most importance to when choosing a primary school teacher? Survey information about parents’ teacher preferences was used to address these questions. Survey results provided evidence about the heterogeneity of parents’ teacher preferences; it has been shown that as parents’ age, education status and income level increases, their preference for teachers increases. Additionally, findings show that the majority of parents are mothers; however, it has been shown that parents decide together on teacher selection.
