AN EVALUATION OF MARINE TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING PROGRAMME STUDENTS’ LEARNING STYLES
Öz
The quality standards of
vocational subjects in Higher Education need to be revisited by focusing on
different aspects. In this manner, the local studies would provide a detailed
analysis to discover the issues in the wider context. While there are many
studies focused on the learning styles of prospective teachers and geography
students, so far, it has been little known about the Maritime students’
learning styles which is always vital for organising, teaching, and learning
activities. In this case, the current study focuses on a programme that
includes both camps (“Social Sciences” and ”Natural and Applied Sciences”).
This study therefore aims to discover the students’ learning styles in the
Marine Transportation Engineering Programmes, utilizing Kolb’s Learning Style
Inventory, which is the most common tool to portray the pupils’ way to learn.
The data collected has been undertaken by the second researcher from two groups
of students studying at the Department of Marine Transportation Engineering.
The inventory has been conducted through 324 students. The descriptive and
inferential statistical techniques (Frequency, Chi-square and One-ANOVA) were
employed to analyze the data. The results presented are placing more emphasis
on the factors affecting students’ learning styles such as gender, grade and
personal intuitive, and living place. In addition to these analyses, the paper
presents a comparison of students’ views on their learning experience in the
maritime programme and their learning styles. The paper has been finalised by
offering a discussion section which might offer some clues to improving the
quality of students’ learning experience in Marine Transportation Engineering
programmes of Maritime Facultie
