NİKLAS LUHMANN’IN ZAMAN YAKLAŞIMI VE SOSYAL SİSTEMLER TEORİSİNDE ZAMAN

Öz

Niklas Luhmann’ın sosyal sistemler teorisinde, “zaman yalnızca bir çalışma nesnesi değil, aynı zamanda sosyal sistemlerin işleyişini yapılandıran bir unsurdur.” Sistemlerin karmaşıklığın seçici bir şekilde işlenmesini sağlayan zamansal sınırlar (geçmiş, şimdi ve gelecek) oluşturmasına olanak tanıyan bir ortam işlevi görür. “Bir sistem, mevcut eylemlerini yönlendirmek için olası gelecekleri düşünürken sürekli olarak geçmişine atıfta bulunur.” Bu nedenle, zaman sistemlerin kendi kendini üretmesi için elzem hale gelir, çünkü “sisteme ait süreçlerin tekrarlanmasına ve kendi kendine yeten bir çerçevenin oluşturulmasına olanak tanır.” Luhmann’a göre zaman aynı zamanda sistemlerin değişen ortamlara uyum sağlamasını sağlayan “anlamı düzeltme ve bozma” mekanizmasıdır. Zamansal yapı olmadan “sistemlerin farklı olaylar arasında ayrım yapamayacağını” ve bunun da bilgi aşırı yüklenmesine yol açacağını savunur. NIKLAS LUHMANN’S TIME APPROACH AND TIME IN SOCIAL SYSTEMS THEORY

Öz

In Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory, “time is not only an object of study, but also an element that structures the functioning of social systems.” It functions as a medium, allowing systems to create temporal boundaries—past, present, and future—that enable selective processing of complexity. “A system constantly refers to its past while reflecting on possible futures to guide its current actions.” Thus, time becomes essential to systems’ self-production, as it “allows the repetition of the processes belonging to the system and the creation of a self-sufficient framework.” For Luhmann, time is also a mechanism for “fixing and disrupting meaning” that allows systems to adapt to changing environments. He argues that without temporal structure, “systems cannot distinguish between different events,” leading to information overload. Luhmann emphasizes the “moment of decision” as crucial, with the present acting as a point where systems synthesize past influences and future projections to guide action. Rejecting traditional concepts of objective time, Luhmann claims “time is socially constructed” and unique to each subsystem, like political or legal systems. These subsystems operate on distinct temporal frameworks, which support risk management in uncertain, fast-changing contexts, illustrating “the flexibility of Luhmann’s theory of time” in complex modern societies.
