A GROUP OF PILGRIM FLASKS FROM THE BURSA ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Öz
Our study aims to examine 17 terracotta ampullae in the collection of Bursa Archaeology Museum. These ampullae have been divided into two main groups based on their size and form. The first group consists of 10 small ampullae (Cat. Nos. 1-10, fig. 1-2) with body diameters ranging from 2.8 cm to 4.9 cm and heights ranging from 2.9 cm to 7.1 cm, each with a small hole-like double handle on the shoulder edge. The ampullae in this group have thick walls. This group is examples of Anatolian productions. The second group consists of 7 ampullae (Cat. Nos. 11-17, Fig. 2-3), larger than the first group, with body diameters ranging from 5.2 to 6.3 cm and heights from 7.2 to 8.3 cm. The ampullae in this group have a globular body with wide handles attached from the shoulder to the neck, and these handles are thin walled. In terms of form, the pieces in this group are closer to production outside Anatolia. The decoration style of these pilgrim flasks is quite limited in terms of their iconographic features. No human or animal figures are used on any of the ampullae. The cross motif is the predominant decorative element in the ornamentations. The cross pattern is sometimes used alone (Cat. nos. 4-6, fig. 1), sometimes framed by wavy lines (Cat. no.11, 14, fig. 2) or dotted bands in relief (Cat. no.15, fig. 3). In addition to cross patterns, a floral pattern (Cat.no.1, fig. 1), an oyster pattern (Cat.no.2, fig. 1) and a tree / tree of life (Cat.no.3, fig. 1) are used in the decoration of these pilgrim flasks. Based on similar examples, it seems appropriate to date these pilgrim flasks to between the between the end of the 5th century and the first half of the 7th century.
