THE COMMODIFICATION AND RESILIENCE OF THE FEMALE BODY IN “GOBLIN MARKET” AND JIBARO: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Christina Rossetti’s “Goblin Market” (1862) and Alberto Mielgo’s animated episode Jibaro (2022) portray the female body as a commodified entity that is objectified by patriarchal discourse. Rossetti’s poem exhibits how the capitalistic market economy paves the way for the usurpation of women through goblin men’s incessant temptations to sell their fruit. Enticed by their call, Laura consumes the goblin fruit, begins to lose her vitality and becomes an object of consumption and control. Similarly, Mielgo’s work represents the desacralisation of the woman’s body by a deaf conquistador in a quasi-mythical colonial setting. In Mielgo’s visual narrative, a group of knights come across a siren whose body is covered by precious jewellery. Although the knights rush to their deaths after being exposed to the siren’s lethal song, the deaf knight survives only to exploit and destroy her golden body. In this context, adopting a postcolonial feminist perspective, this study argues that Laura and the siren demonstrate the patriarchal violence that consumes the female body as a natural and material source. However, their salvation comes through the same source that has prepared their downfall, that is, the female body. Using her whole body as a passive medium of resistance against the goblin men, Lizzie manages to save her sister. Similarly, the river restores the siren to life, and she takes revenge on the conquistador, who is no longer deaf because right after drinking from the blood-infested river he regains his hearing ability. In both works, therefore, it is seen that the female body defies total control, asserting its agency through sisterhood and resilience.
