Mothers’ Experiences of Fever in Their Hospitalized Children: A Qualitative Study

Background: One of the most common symptoms of infantile diseases is fever. Mothers are anxious when their children get fever and, the worries that arise cause the mothers to control the fever as soon as possible. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge levels of the mothers of hospitalized children on fever and to detect behavior and attitudes against fever. Methods: This study adopted a qualitative research design. Data were collected from mothers who had hospitalized children at with a focus group interviews. Study data were collected between September-November 2017 with the focus group interview consisting of semi-structured, and the data were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Results: In the focus group interview the mother's knowledge and applications about fever were were emerged in 4 themes ve 9 categories as "Fever Perception", "Made Applications", "Emotional Changes", and "Source of Information". Conclusion: Findings of the work reveal that the fever is a frightening experience for the mothers. The reason for the fear of the mothers is that the fever may cause convulsion. This experience have unknown aspects, which must be investigated in order to plan better support for the mothers and children.

Annelerin Hastanede Yatan Çocuklarında Ateş Deneyimleri: Niteliksel Bir Çalışma

Öz

Giriş: Bebeklik dönemindeki hastalıkların en sık görülen semptomlarından biri ateştir. Ateşle birlikte anneler endişe duyarlar ve ortaya çıkan endişeler annelerin mümkün olan en kısa sürede ateşi kontrol etmelerine yol açar. Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı hastanede yatan çocukların annelerinin ateş konusundaki bilgi düzeylerinin saptanması, ateş karşısındaki davranış ve tutumlarının belirlenmesidir. Yöntem: Bu çalışma nitel araştırma tasarımı benimsemiştir. Veriler, odak grup görüşmeleriyle çocuklarını hastaneye yatıran annelerden toplanmıştır. Çalışma verileri, Eylül-Kasım 2017 arasında yarı yapılandırılmış odak grup görüşmesi ile toplanmış ve veriler geleneksel içerik analizi kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular: Odak grup görüşmesinde, annenin ateşle ilgili bilgi ve uygulamaları, “Ateş Algısı”, “Yapılan Uygulamalar”, “Duygusal Değişiklikler” ve “Bilgi Kaynağı” olmak üzere 4 tema ve 9 kategoride ortaya çıkmıştır. Sonuç: Çalışmanın bulguları, ateşin anneler için korkutucu bir deneyim olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Annelerin korkusunun nedeni, ateşin konvülsiyona neden olabileceğidir. Bu deneyim anneler ve çocuklar için daha iyi destek sağlamak amacıyla bilinmeyen araştırılması gereken yönlere sahiptir.
