Investigation of Cultural Sensitivity and Cultural Skills of Nurse / Midwives Working in Family Health Centers

Background and Objectives: The aim of the present study was to determine the intercultural sensitivity and cultural skills of nurses/midwives working at family health centers. Methods: Nurses /midwives working in the family health centers of two districts were included in the study (n: 108). To collect the study data, the Sociodemographic and Cultural Care Characteristics Form, Cultural Sensitivity Scale, and Intercultural Competence Scale were used. The study data were collected between March 15, 2017 and June 20, 2017. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0. Results: The mean age of the nurses/midwives participating in the study was 40.2 ± 8.2 years, 99.1% were female, 43.5% had the Bachelor’s Degree, 35.2% had the associate degree. Their median length of service in the primary care health services was 10.5 years. Of them, 13% took intercultural nursing courses, and 50% wanted to participate in a training program. The mean scores the participants obtained from the Cultural Sensitivity Scale and Intercultural Competence Scale were 77.1 ± 5.4 (59-88) and 51.2 ± 6.5 (32-65) respectively. As the Cultural Sensitivity Scale score increased, so did the Intercultural Competence Scale score (p = .000). Those who took orientation courses and in-service training on culture (p =.020), and those who took intercultural nursing courses (p =.019) obtained higher scores from the overall Cultural Sensitivity Scale. Those who believed that being knowledgeable about the culture of a patient would affect the healthcare they would give also obtained higher scores from the Intercultural Competence Scale (p =.03). Conclusion: The results showed that the cultural sensitivity and cultural competence levels of the nurses/midwives working in the family health centers were at a moderate level. The results of the study revealed the importance of carrying out training programs aimed at increasing the cultural sensitivity and competence of nurses/midwives working in primary care health services.

Aile Sağlığı Merkezlerinde Çalışan Hemşire/Ebelerin Kültürel Duyarlılık ve Kültürel Beceri Düzeylerinin İncelenmesi

Giriş ve Amaç: Çalışmanın amacı aile sağlığı merkezlerinde çalışan hemşire/ebelerin kültürel duyarlılık ve kültürel beceri düzeylerinin incelenmesidir. Yöntem: Araştırmaya iki ilçenin aile sağlığı merkezlerinde çalışan hemşire/ebeler alınmıştır (n:108). Veri toplamada Sosyodemografik ve Kültürel Bakıma İlişkin Özellikler Formu, Kültürel Duyarlılık Ölçeği, Kültürlerarası Beceri Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Veriler 15 Mart- 20 Haziran 2017 tarihleri arasında toplanmıştır. Veriler SPSS 25.0 programında analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular: Hemşire/ebelerin yaş ortalaması 40.2 ± 8.2 olup %99.1’i kadın, %43.5’i lisans, %35.2’si önlisans mezunudur. Birinci basamakta çalışma yılları medyanı 10.5 yıldır. Hemşire/ebelerin %13’ü kültürlerarası hemşirelik dersi almış, %50’si ise bir eğitim programına katılmak istemektedir. Kültürel Duyarlılık ölçeği toplam puanı 77.1±5.4 (59-88), Kültürlerarası Beceri Ölçeği toplam puanı 51.2±6.5’dir (32-65). Kültürel Duyarlılık ölçek puanı arttıkça Kültürel Beceri ölçek puanı da artmaktadır (p=.00). Kültür ile ilgili hizmet içi eğitim alanların (p=.20), kültürlerarası hemşirelik dersi alanların Kültürel Duyarlılık toplam ölçek puanı daha yüksektir (p=.19). Hastalarının kültürünü tanıyarak verebileceği bakımın tedaviyi etkileyeceğine inananların Kültürlerarası Beceri Ölçeği toplam puanları daha yüksektir (p=.03). Sonuç: Araştırma bulguları, aile sağlığı merkezlerinde çalışan hemşire/ebelerin kültürel duyarlılık ve kültürel becerilerinin orta düzeyde olduğunu göstermiştir. Araştırma sonuçları birinci basamakta çalışan hemşire/ebelere yönelik kültürel duyarlılık ve beceriyi artırmaya yönelik eğitim programlarının yürütülmesinin önemini ortaya koymaktadır.
