The Effect of Motivational Interviewing on Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review

Yıl 2017, Cilt: 10 Sayı: 3, 167 - 176, 01.08.2017

Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) which has a growing prevalence all over the world is an important public health problem.
Self-management is of importance for preventing acute and chronically complications. Objectives: The aim of this study is to review studies
related to the effect motivational interview (MI) in adults diagnosed as T2DM systematically. Methods: This is a qualitative study with
systematic review design based on document analysis of articles. The population of this study consisted of 7621 articles searched by using
CINAHL Complete (5093), Medline (640) and Science Citation Index (1888), Turkish Medicine Serial (0) with 6 English and 2 Turkish
keywords. Thus 16 articles based on selection criteria consisted of the sample of the study. Results: 10 of the studies were done based on 10
randomized controlled, 3 qualitative, 1 action study, 1 translational experimental pre-test post-test and 1 quasi-experimental methods. In 9
studies reviewed in this study, it was found that there were significant decreases in hemoglobin A1c levels after MI intervention, and in 4
studies there were significant developments related to adults’ diabetes self-management and self-care. Conclusion: It is thought that MI
program in T2DM has positive effects and in-service education programs on MI will be useful to develop diabetic nurses’ consultation skills.
