Many pegmatitic and granitic rocks with different genesis, petrological and mineralogical aspects crop
out in Menderes Metamorphic Massif which covers a large area in Aegean Region. In SinancılarKemalpaşa
distric,t tourmalines either in granitoids and their contacts or surrounding contact
metamorphic haloes show significant variations in texture and composition. The tourmalines close to
dravite end-member of schorl-dravite solid solution serie exhibits “proton deficency trend”. While the
tourmalines in granitic and aplitic rocks have high concentrations of Al, the tourmalines in surrounding
contact metamorphic haloes are distinguished by their high Mg and Ca content. In Çine southern part of
the Menderes Massif the tourmalines of Na and K-feldspar bearing pegmatites emplaced in the gneiss of
the core serie show bimodal “proton deficency trend”. They are distinguishable from tourmalines of
Sinacılar with their high Fe and Na content. The results of the mössbauer and infra-red studies indicate
that the ferric and ferrous iron is hosted either in Y or Z sites of the tourmaline crystal lattice. The
oxidation of the iron possibly triggered by the hydrothermal fluids associated with metamorphic processes.
The chemistry of the tourmalines in both Sinancılar and Çine region are controlled by the anatectic genesis
of the granitoids, the contact metamorphic processes after regional metamorphism and the following
hydrothermal activities.
