ELDERLY WOMEN CARING FOR THE ELDERLY: SOCIOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS OF THE ‘I CAN BARELY TAKE CARE OF MYSELF’ EXPERIENCE

Öz

One of the most significant demographic challenges facing the world today is the steadily aging population. As ageing progresses, physical changes make it increasingly difficult for older individuals to carry out daily activities independently, often leading them to rely on the care and support of others. In Turkey, as a result of the prevailing traditional and patriarchal social structure, the responsibility of caring for dependent elderly individuals is largely assigned to women. However, when caregivers themselves are also of advanced age, i.e. 65 and above, this responsibility becomes a multidimensional issue. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 elderly women who provide round-the-clock care for their elderly relatives, within the scope of a qualitative research approach. This research approach was chosen in order to facilitate 'narrative interviews' - whereby the subjects were asked a series of questions that required them to answer with their own, personal experiences, enabling variation and subtlety of responses. The data obtained was analyzed to reveal the challenges faced by elderly female caregivers, their experiences, and the needs that arise in the caregiving process. Main findings confirmed existing literature and studies, revealing that elderly female carers, who are not only dealing with chronic illnesses, mobility limitations and decreased energy that naturally accompany aging, are also facing psychosocial difficulties such as stress, burnout, social isolation, and depression, as a result of burdenous caregiving. Moreover, the invisibility and unpaid nature of care work further push them into a socially and economically disadvantaged position. Therefore, elderly care labor emerges as a critical social issue that must be addressed not only on an individual level, but also within sociological, psychological, and policy-making frameworks. This study demonstrates the need to redesign and expand care policies in Turkey. It further emphasizes that care labor not be regarded solely as a responsibility assigned to women, but rather as a collective societal responsibility.
