The great merchant, therefore invests a little of his money everywhere, not necessarily taking part in the administration of his business, but waiting for his distribution of profits. The price rise, which began in Spain, overran Italy, then France, where it reached a peak in England. The price revolution occurred as a result of the increasing stock of monetary metals. But the canon lawyers and the church preachers were declared that; one man's gain in trading must always be another's loss, so not everyone that sells at higher price than he bought as a trader, by this reason, all commercial gains must be equal to the exertions of the merchant. Büyük keşifler, eski yolların terk edilerek yenilerinin açılması, Akdeniz yerine Atlantik seyrinin yeğlenmesi, yenidünyadan getirilen kıymetli madenlerin muazzam miktarı, bunların hepsi ticaret devrimine yol açmıştır. On beşinci asrın yatırıma yönelik iş fırsatları muazzam derecede artmış, hemen her türden borçlanma yaygınlaşmış, denizcilik sigortaları yaygınlaşmış, özel ve kamu borçlanmalarda büyük artışlar görülmüş, gemi mülkiyetine ve çeşitli şirket sermayelerine katılım hızlanmıştır. Büyük kentlerde devredilebilir tahvil ve hisse senetleri alınır satılır olmuştur. Büyük tüccarlar, şirketin yönetimine hiç katılmaksızın, en küçük parasını dahi her yerde sermayeye dönüştürebilme olanağına kavuştuğu gibi, kârların dağıtılmasını beklemekle yetinmiştir. Fiyat yükselişleri İspanya, İtalya ve Fransa'da baş göstermiş, zirvesine ise İngiltere'de ulaşmıştır. Fiyat devrimi, para olarak da kullanılan kıymetli madenler stokundaki artışın bir sonucu olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Oysa kilise hukukçuları ve vaizleri, bir kimsenin ticarette ulaşacağı kazancın ancak diğerlerinin zarara uğratılmasıyla olanaklı olduğunu, kendisi bir tüccar dahi olsa aldığı fiyattan daha yükseğine satmaması gerektiğini, bu nedenden dolayı da, bütün ticari kazançların daima tüccarın çabalarının bedeline eşit olması gerektiğini, açıkça bildirmişlerdir. Kilise özel serveti savunmuştur ve tüccara kendi emeğinin bedeline denk bir kârı elde etmesine izin vermiştir; fakat zenginliklere yol açan aşırılıkları tamamıyla günahkârlık olarak nitelendirmiştir. Ayrıca, verilen borçtan fazlasının alınmasını, olmayan bir şeyin satılması olarak görerek kendi içinde adaletsizliğe neden olduğunu, bu fazladan ödemenin de adalete aykırı olduğunu bildirmiştir.
