Working Situations and the Factors Affecting the Working Sıtuatıon of Syrian Children Between the Age of 6-17 Living In A Neighbourhood of İzmir
Öz
Objective: This study aimed to determine the working
situations and the socio-demographic factors affecting the working situation of
Syrian children between the age of 6-17 living in a neighborhood of Izmir.
Material and method: The data of this cross-sectional study was collected in the participants’ dwellings through an interpreter. While the current working status was the dependent variable, the independent variables were age, gender, educational status, continuance of their education in Turkey, registration status, Turkish speaking status and presence of language barrier. Data were analyzed by independent samples t-test, chi-square test and logistic regression. The study was supported by TUBITAK with the project number of 115S854.
Results: A hundred and sixty-four Syrian children
between the age 6-17 were interviewed. Of the study group 25.6% were currently
working while 9.8% were looking for work. Mean age of children working or
looking for work was significantly higher (p<0.05)
than the working group. There was significant difference between gender,
education, Turkish speaking status and having a language barrier between the
children who are currently working/looking for a job and who are not working (p<0.05). In multivariable analysis,
age and male gender were significant predictors of working situation.
Conclusion: One out of every three children were
determined to be working or looking for work. Child labor keeps these children
away from education. The national policies which are conducted for avoiding
child labor must include Syrian children.
