INVESTIGATING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS, ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH WITH THE HISTORICAL DECOMPOSITION APPROACH IN TURKEY

Yıl 2021, Sayı: 27, 292 - 307, 30.06.2021

Öz

The purpose of this study, Turkey carbon dioxide emissions in the economy, examines the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth from a historical perspective. For this purpose, the historical decomposition method was used, taking into account the time-varying interaction and business cycle between these variables. According to the results obtained from the study period, from the 1980s until today, especially against the reduction of CO2 emissions by reducing the use of fossil-based energy in Turkey sacrificing economic growth was achieved partly from findings that it should. In addition, it was observed that the shock in the energy consumption and real GDP series for the 2002-2007 sub-period increased CO2 emissions in the 2002-2007 subperiod, while the other sub-periods subject to the analysis had a weak positive and negative shortterm effects. This result does not give clear information regarding the EKC hypothesis for Turkey. This finding probably show a circular feature can be stated that the EKC hypothesis as a result of short-term political and economic shocks in Turkey.
