FÂRÂBÎ ON WAR

Öz

Fârâbî makes a distinction between just and unjust wars. In addition to defensive war, he accepts a legitimate war of aggression. Just war principles are considered for the virtuous city. A war is legitimate and justifi ed if it will be to defense against an external enemy; to acquire goodness that the city deserves but that is in the possession of others; to force people to accept the best for them, when they do not recognize it by themselves; to enslave people who are naturally fi t to serve, but who refuse the yoke of slavery; to seek restitution from those who withhold something that rightly belongs to the citizens of the city; to punish evildoers so that they do not repeat their crimes against the city and as a means of intimidating others who might think of emulating them; and total extermination of those whose mere survival might hand the inhabitants of the city. Principles of unjust wars are as follows: humiliating people and making them submissive; having them honor him; imposing on them his own passion; tyrannizing them; satisfying his fury or seeking the sheer pleasure of victory, or unduly punishing them for an injustice committed on their part that clearly deserves less than warfare and killing. Also, if a war based on the wealth, honor, or politics it will be unjust. Farabi’s reminiscent statements on jihad are subject to review in different ways.
