Salah
(prayer), which is considered to be the pillar of Islam and which enables human
to communicate with Allah without any intermediaries, has an important function,
in spiritual terms,
to
build a strong and moral society. According to the prevailing jurisprudental understanding,
it is essential to perform each prayer within a certain time of the day particularly
designated for it.
However,
a number of practices attributed to the Prophet Muhammad and his companions in
relation to shortening and combining certain obligatory prayers into a single performance at a
certain time of the day has brought along controversies. This study deals, from
jurisprudental perspective,
with the issue of shortening and combining certain prayers and the criteria used
as the basis to do so in terms of the conditions of the modern times.
