Tafsīr (Qur’anic exegesis) briefly means the study of comprehending the Holy Qur’ān. Sīra, on the other hand, means to deal with the life of the Prophet Muhammad (saw), the preacher of the Holy Qur’ān. The two branches of knowledge are of utmost benefit for one another. While the authors of Sīra have benefitted from the verses in the process of writing the biography of the Prophet, mufassirs (commentators of the Qur’ān) have also included numerous narratives of Sīra in their works. In this study, Nasafī’s exegesis titled Madārik al-Tanzīl wa Haqāʻiq al-Tawʻīl will be discussed in terms of the narratives of Sīra it includes. Nasafī lived in Māwarāʾ an-Nahr (Transoxiana), and was considered among the leading figures of Hanafī/Maturidī Schools. His works were taught in madrasas for a long time and preserved their value and importance. It is important to determine the approach of the author to the main issues in the life of Prophet Muhammad in his shortly and concisely written work. In this study, the approach of the author to Sīra narratives as well as to his understanding of Prophet Muhammad will be tried to be determined. The narratives will be evaluated in comparison with the Sīra sources of the early period. Besides, several examples will be presented regarding the richness of the narratives included in Madārik al-Tanzīl.
