‘Adāla (justness) is one of the basic qualities sought in hadith narrators. It refers to the narrator's being a Muslim, sound-minded, and religious and moral maturity. There are two methods to determine this qualification: shuhra and tazkiah. The shuhra is the narrator’s being known with his/her ‘Adāla among the hadith scholars, while tazkiah is the declaration of the narrator to be competent by two scholars who are known just. According to another method expressed by Ibn Abdilber (d. 463/1071), every scholar who is known with his meticuluousness in the field of hadith is considered to be just until there is evidence showing that he/she has been repeatedly wrong. And, he takes an authentic narration as a basis transmitted from many Companions. This hadith: “This knowledge is to be carried by the 'Adil of each generation. They will protect this knowledge against the distortions of extremists, the interpretations of the ignorants, and the ideas of the superstitious people”, is considered as an evidence by some scholars like Ibn Abdilber, it is also severely criticized by others. In this study, we will try to reveal whether this hadith is suitable as evidence by considering the accessible versions of the hadith.
