A QUALITATIVE STUDY ON THE EVALUATION OF CREATIVE WRITING PRODUCTS WITH RESPECT TO CERTAIN CRITERIA

Abstract

Creative writing is the original written expression of ideas and images conjured upin the mind. With creative writing, one gets to know their inner world and discovers his own unusual characteristics. The main purpose of this study is to evaluatethe content of elementary 4th and 5th grade students’ creative writing products andreveal their quality with respect to pre-specified criteria. The study used the qualitative technique of content analysis. The written products obtained during the studywere examined in detail to identify students’ creative writing competencies. Thepopulation of the study included 4th and 5th graders in the center of the provinceof Denizli. The sample was selected by using the purposeful sampling method of“maximum variability sampling”. The study was conducted with 412 studentsattending 6 different elementary schools. The evaluation of the written products wasmade by using the “Evaluation Criteria for Creative Writing (ECCW)” developedby Susar Kırmızı (2009). The creative written products were read carefully both bythe researcher and by another field expert, and scored in line with the criteriaincluded in the ECCW. The consistency coefficients obtained from both sets ofscores were: .84 for the first criteria; .73 for the second one; .76 for the third one;.76 for the fourth one; .65 for the fifth one; and .71 for the sixth one. Codes wereformed during the reading process. These codes were then grouped to reach thethemes of the study. The analyses resulted in the themes of “valuing human happiness” and “personal expectations for the future”. The examination of student products showed that students mostly used unoriginal, commonplace opinions. Further, most written products were not fluent and failed to clearly express thoughts andopinions
