Rhetorical Structure of Research Article Abstracts in Social Sciences

Abstract

Article abstracts are defined as a text genre that has the functions of promoting the article and persuading readers to read the main text. The aim of this study is to determine and compare the rhetorical structure in the research article abstracts of philosophy, psychology and history under social sciences. For this purpose, a database consisting of 150 abstracts (50 abstracts in philosophy, 50 abstracts in psychology and 50 abstracts in history) was built. The abstracts in this database were written in Turkish and published in scientific journals between 2013 and 2017. The abstracts were classified according to the article abstract move classification by Hyland (2004). The findings of the study showed tendency towards introduction and purpose (I and P) moves in philosophy and history abstracts, and a tendency towards moves that refer to the main sections of the article, such as purpose, method, results and conclusion (P-M-R-C) moves in psychology abstracts. In the context of the findings in this study, the writers in the fields under social sciences have different motivations while creating article abstract, prioritize different types of information for their potential readers and therefore they have different perspectives for directing their readers to reading the main text.
