The Action-Oriented Approach to Foreign Language Teaching

Abstract

The action-oriented approach has emerged with Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). CEFR has tried to present the basic principles of this approach. As a current language teaching methodology the action-oriented approach has a wide field of application. It is benefited from particularly in preparing textbooks, programs and level-based exams in the field of foreign languages. In this method, an individual is a "social agent" who fulfills a task in social settings. The social agent is in interaction with other individuals and fulfills a task in this interaction, thus getting involved in an action-oriented process. This approach supports the active use of language in all settings and it is based on realizing micro-tasks that are depicted around macro-tasks. In this study, the main features of the action-oriented approach and the key concept of "task" are discussed.
