This study focuses on the female characters in Aminatta Forna’s The Memory of Love and investigates how these characters are portrayed and represented. In my study investigating African women in the selected novel, it has been observed that Forna includes several types of female characters by deconstructing the docile, weak, and submissive African woman image, especially depicted with an orientalist and western perspective. Another noteworthy aspect of the work is that, though Forna features multiple female characters, the African women in the novel are overshadowed. Even though Forna, as an African woman writer, destroys the stereotypes of weak and inferior African woman image, the fact that the novel’s narrators are male characters and the details of the female characters are included in the male narrators’ stories prevented the female characters’ voices from being heard loudly. The African women at the center of the novel are perceived as silent and speechless characters since they are in the position of being told rather than as narrators. Accordingly, this paper delves into Forna’s novel on the basis of female characters and focuses on how African women are represented.
