Religious, Social And Cultural Activities In Condolence Ceremonies In Van Region

Abstract

Condolence is a concept that refers to a visit made to the deceased's relatives after the funeral and burial procedures held after the death of someone, to offer condolences. Condolence has continued as a tradition in Islamic history, but it has also been influenced by the customs, traditions, and rules of Muslim societies. In other words, condolence is a ceremony that Muslim societies have practiced throughout history, although it has also been influenced by the established traditions and habits of societies that have accepted Islam. Today, the tradition of condolence continues in almost every region of Turkey, albeit in different practices and forms. This study aims to examine the condolence ceremonies held after funeral and burial procedures in the Van region and to reveal the religious, social, and cultural activities in these ceremonies. The study was conducted according to the case study design, which is one of the qualitative research methods. A case study is a research design in which an event or phenomenon is considered a situation that needs to be investigated, and the problems are identified and the subject of the research is determined. Here, the condolence tradition in the Van region is considered a situation waiting to be investigated. The data of the research were collected in two stages, namely observation and interview. The theoretical infrastructure of the research was created with the data obtained from the document review, and its place in the literature was determined. Here, the concept of condolence, related concepts, and information about its position in Islamic thought were based on relevant sources. In the observation stage, the researchers participated in the condolence ceremonies as participant observers and kept records related to the purpose of the research and collected data. In the interview stage, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with religious officials, administrators, and opinion leaders who constitute the active participants of the condolence ceremonies. The data obtained from the observations and interviews were subjected to content analysis by the researchers. As a result of the content analysis conducted, five themes were obtained following the aims and objectives of the research. These themes are religious and social activities organized in condolence ceremonies, informal religious education practices that stand out in these ceremonies, methods used in these educational practices, characteristics of the people who actively manage the educational activities and the impact of all these activities organized in condolence ceremonies on the religious and social life of the local people. The themes in question were transformed into finding titles, and the quotations from the obtained data were interpreted and discussed within the framework of existing literature and research. According to the results obtained from the research, various activities and presentations that can be included in the category of informal religious education are carried out in condolence ceremonies. In other words, religious, social, and cultural activities organized in condolence ceremonies constitute activities that can be evaluated in the category of informal religious education. These activities are organized by religious officials and opinion leaders in the region and are also requested and adopted by the local people. This situation encourages the sustainability of these ceremonies. All these activities, which are also based on various narrations, have become a tradition of the condolence ceremonies of the local people.
