Ethical Values of Vocational High School Students Studying in the Field of Health: A Cross-Sectional Analysis

Aim: The purpose of this study is to determine the ethical values of vocational high school students that have students in the therapy and rehabilitation departments operating widely in the health field and to reveal their approaches to professional ethics policies. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted using a cross-sectional analysis method. The study included 158 students enrolled in the Therapy and Rehabilitation Department of Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University Kozaklı Vocational High School. These 158 students were divided into two groups: those who took an ethics course and those who did not. The ‘Health Sciences Students Ethical Values Scale’ was used as the measurement tool. Results: There is a significant difference in only 5 questions of the 27-question survey in return for those who take ethics courses and those who do (p<0.05). Significant differences were observed in the following items: ‘I approach events without prejudice’ (p=0.039), ‘I communicate with each person equally’ (p=0.038), ‘I respect each person’ (p=0.036), ‘I respect human freedom’ (p=0.038) and ‘An action should not be taken if it will harm a person’ (p=0.041). Conclusion: The study revealed that the ethical values of therapy and rehabilitation students studying in the health field did not fully meet the ethical values determined on the scale, and that they had difficulty making decisions in certain ethical dilemmas. The generally high level of ethical values in vocational high schools in the health field is considered a positive finding, indicating the need for training and working methods related to specific ethical situations.
