Nizami Ganjavı’s Biography and Creative Legacy in The Context of Uzbek Literary Studies
Öz
Prominent representatives of classical Eastern literature have played an important role in the formation of Azerbaijani–Uzbek literary relations. In this respect, the creative legacies of Nizami Ganjavi and Alisher Navoi are of particular significance. Alisher Navoi regarded Nizami as his spiritual mentor and source of inspiration and held him in deep reverence. He characterized Nizami with exalted spiritual values such as “Pir” and “Khizr,” and referred to Nizami’s Khamsa as the “Five Treasures,” thereby emphasizing its exceptional position in Eastern literature. The special sections devoted to Nizami at the beginning of each epic included in Navoi’s Khamsa are an artistic expression of his love and respect for his master. The influence of Nizami’s literary heritage on Uzbek literature and the scholarly study of this heritage have, for many years, been the subject of research by a number of distinguished scholars. Academic Vahid Abdullayev, academician Vahid Zahidov, Professor Saidakhon Narzullayeva, Professor Shahmuhammad Shahmuhammadov, and many other prominent Uzbek scholars have comprehensively examined the ideological and aesthetic features of Nizami’s творчество as well as its influence on Uzbek literature and literary studies. These scholars dedicated their doctoral dissertations to theoretical and scholarly problems related to Nizami’s creative legacy and successfully defended them in Baku at the Nizami Ganjavi Institute of Literature of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. This fact clearly demonstrates that Azerbaijani–Uzbek literary and scholarly cooperation has been formed at a high level and is based on strong traditions. The existence of the world’s oldest manuscripts of Nizami Ganjavi in Uzbekistan, as well as ancient manuscripts of Alisher Navoi in Azerbaijan, indicates the deep historical roots of these literary relations. These facts show that the literary and cultural relations between the two peoples have continued for centuries and have developed on the basis of mutual influence and spiritual affinity.
