Hume And Nietzsche: A Debate on Human Nature

In this paper, focusing particularly on Hume and Nietzsche, I aim to to examine the historical aspects of the debate on human nature. Indeed, the philosophical debate regarding human nature is an old one. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the philosophical issue regarding the problem of human nature was widely attractive and discussed extensively among British philosophers. However, at the beginning of the next century, the issue lost its significance and its attraction as well. One important reason for that is Nietzsche’s criticisms directed at the idea of human nature. Th is paper consists mainly of three parts. In the first part, I present arguments of British philosophers who attempted to build a science of human nature. In the second part, I present the arguments of Hume, in particular his understanding of history and its relation to human nature. Finally, in the third part, I discuss the criticism of the idea of the human nature given by Nietzsche

İnsan Doğası Üzerine Bir Tartışma: Hume ve Nietzsche

Öz

On yedinci yüzyılın sonlarından on sekizinci yüzyılın ortalarına kadar, özellikle birçok Britanyalı filozof insan doğasına ilişkin kapsamlı bir felsefi tartışma içerisine girmiştir. Ancak bu dönemi takip eden yüzyılda söz konusu tartışma zamanla şiddetini yitirmiştir. Bu durumun ortaya çıkmasındaki önemli bir etken Nietzsche’nin insan doğası tartışmasına getirdiği eleştirilerdir. Bu yazıda özellikle on yedinci yüzyılın sonlarından on sekizinci yüzyılın ortalarına kadar kapsamlı bir şekilde tartışılan insan doğası tartışmasının tarihsel bir incelemesini yapacağım. İlk olarak insan doğasının bilimini kurmaya girişen filozofl ara değinerek, onların insan doğasına ilişkin görüşlerini ele alacağım. Daha sonra söz konusu filozofl arla aynı çizgide yer alan Hume’un insan doğasına yönelik düşüncelerini inceleyip, onun insan doğası ve tarih ile kurduğu bağlantıyı aydınlatmaya çalışacağım. Son bölümde ise Nietzsche’nin insan doğasının bilimini kurmaya girişen filozofl ara getirdiği eleştirileri gerekçeleri ile beraber ortaya koyacağım
