A Commentary on Aristotle’s 9. Chapter of Peri Hermenias: “Future Contingent Propositions”

Öz

In this article, I evaluated and comment on Aristotle’s 9. chapter of On Interpretation which is an arguable and noteworthy text. This chapter determined and gave rise to modal logic’s itself and its way. For this chapter, temporal propositions (about future) couldn’t have “now” any value as true or false and so they don’t depend on classical principle of bivalence. Thus, such events and statements don’t depend on classical principle of contradiction. Such that statements may have many modal cases as necessary, non-necessary (contingenty), possibilty and impossibility and must be valued subject to these. For the future contingent statements they are in a possibility and contingency so are indeterminate and open to chance. When someone makes a decision this kind of proposition will be true or false. İf future contingent statements have any truth once for principle of contradiction, they must be or not be in necesarry, so we can say, there is a fatalism about these situations. However Aristotle wouldn’t like this for to constitute a deliberated rights and acts for men. Therefore Aristotle said that about future contingent singular statements must have not been said of necessarly but of possibility and indeterminately

Aristoteles’in Peri Hermeneias (Yorum Üzerine) Eserinin 9. Bölümü Üzerine Bir Yorum Denemesi: “Geleceğe Ait Olumsal Önermeler”

Öz

Bu makalede Aristoteles’in Peri Hermeneias (Yorum Üzerine) adlı eserinin çok tartışılan 9. bölümü üzerine bir değerlendirme ve yorum çalışması yapılmıştır. Kiplik mantığının temellerinde yer alan bu bölüm önermelerde zaman da söz konusu olduğunda klasik bir biçimde doğru ya da yanlış değerinin önceden iki seçenekli olarak belli olması gibi bir durumun olamayacağını sergilemektedir. Bu anlamda olaylar ve önermeler açısından da çelişmezlik ilkesinin yine klasik anlamıyla işlemediği ortaya konmaktadır. Bu tür zamansal önermeler zorunlu, olanaklı, olanaksız ve olumsallık kipleri içinde doğruluk değerlerini alabilmektedir. Geleceğe yönelik önermelerde olanaklılık ve olumsallık söz konusu olduğu için bir belirsizliğe, rastlantıya açık olmakta ve seçime de dayalı olarak gelecekte doğruluk değerlerini kazanmaktadırlar. Eğer tüm olaylar ve önermeler çelişki ilkesi gereği önceden zorunlu bir olma ya da olmama ile zorunlu bir doğru ya da yanlış olma durumuna tabi olurlarsa bu bir fatalizmi doğuracaktır. Fatalizmden kaçınmak isteyen ve böylece insana seçim olanağını da tanıyan Aristoteles geleceğe yönelik tekil önermelerde zorunluluk yerine olanaklılığı temele almıştır
