Fatih Kazancı, Central Banks and Interest-Free Banking, 2020, Istanbul, Economics Publications, 380 Pages, Paperback (130 TL), ISBN: 978-625-7015-03-5
Abstract
Islamic banking has attracted attention as a growing financial sector over the years, and the tools and facilities provided by central banks to these banks are increasingly questioned. This book provides a comprehensive review of the functioning of Islamic banking and its relationship with central banks. Based on current sources and practices, the author addresses how conventional banking tools can be adapted for Islamic banks from a jurisprudential and economic perspective. The book consists of three sections: The first section examines the history, monetary policies and practices of global central banks. The second section addresses the establishment processes of interest-free Islamic banks, the challenges they face and the solutions they produce to these challenges. The third section details the history, development and relations of participation banks in Türkiye with the CBRT. In conclusion, alternative models and products needed by participation banks, like the tools provided by the CBRT to conventional banks, are proposed. While conveying the historical development in chronological order, the author compares Islamic banking practices in different geographies and provides a general assessment. However, the focus of the book is to explain the status and development of participation banks in Türkiye. The book addresses the jurisprudential and economic aspects of Islamic banking, while also shedding light on the challenges faced by interest-free banking in practice.
