Roman Colonization at the Troad: Reasons and Results

The Roman colonisation policy in the Troad began with Julius Caesar and Lampsakos and Parion in the north of the region received the Roman colonial status. After the first colonization activities, Alexandria Troas were also converted into a Roman colony in the reign of Emperor Augustus. There must have been several reasons for the colonization activities, which took place on the coast of Troad in a short period of time about a period of twenty-five years. The first of these is undoubtedly based on military reasons. In addition to the geopolitical location, it is noteworthy that the settlements chosen as colonies are port cities that had rich in underground resources and fertile lands. All these elements were of great importance not only to the military and economic interests of the Roman Empire, but also to the colonists who were starting “a new life”. As a result of the colonization of these three Greek cities with new settlers, changes in the demographic, religious, political, socio-cultural, and economic, structures of the cities began to be observed. In the present study, which was prepared to take into account archaeological, epigraphic and ancient sources, these effects of Roman colonization in Lampsakos, Parion and Alexandria Troas in the Troad were shown.

Troas'ta Roma Kolonizasyonu: Nedenler ve Sonuçlar

Öz

Troas’taki Roma kolonizasyon politikası Iulius Caesar ile başlar ve bölgenin kuzeyinde yer alan Lampsakos ve Parion’a, Roma koloni statüsü verilir.  Bu ilk kolonizasyon faaliyetlerinin ardından, İmparator Augustus tarafından Alexandria Troas da bir Roma kolonisine dönüştürülür. Yaklaşık çeyrek asırlık süre içerisinde bölgenin kıyı şeridinde izlenen bu kolonizasyon politikasının birden fazla nedeni olmalıdır. Bu nedenlerin başında, hiç şüphesiz askeri yani güvenlik gerekçeleri gelir. Jeopolitik konumları yanında, kolonize edilmek üzere seçilen kentlerin, zengin yeraltı kaynaklarına sahip ve verimli arazilerle çevrili liman yerleşimleri oldukları aşikârdır.  Tüm bu unsurlar, sadece Roma İmparatorluğu’nun askeri ve ekonomik çıkarları için değil, aynı zamanda “yeni bir yaşam” kuran kolonistler için de oldukça değerlidir.  Bu üç Grek kentinin yeni yerleşimcilerle kolonize edilmesi sonucunda, kentlerin demografik, dini, siyasi, sosyo-kültürel ve ekonomik yapılarında değişimler gözlemlenmeye başlar. Epigrafik, arkeolojik ve antik kaynaklar ışığında hazırlanan mevcut çalışmada tüm yönleriyle Roma kolonizasyonun Troas bölgesindeki Lampsakos, Parion ve Alexandria Troas’ta bıraktığı bu izler ortaya konmuştur.
