Görsel Sanatlarda Oksimoronlar: Joseph Mallord William Turner’ın Eserleri Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Öz

Çeşitli disiplinlerde olduğu gibi, görsel sanatlarda da bir arada kullanılan zıt unsurların yarattığı çelişkiler, birbirinden farklı biçimsel ve anlamsal katmanlara sahip “paradoks” ve “ironi” gibi kavramlarla birlikte “oksimoron” aracılığıyla da ifade edilir. Düşündürme, sorgulatma ve duygusal bağlamda etki yaratma özelliğine sahip olan oksimoronlar, sanat dinamiklerinde sözel olmaktan çıkar ve görsel unsurlar olarak tezahür eder. Diğer görsel sanat disiplinleriyle birlikte resim sanatında da varlık gösteren oksimoronlar, anlatımı zenginleştirerek izleyicinin algısını yönlendirir. Bu çalışma, İngiliz ressam Joseph Mallord William Turner’ın seçilmiş eserlerini “görsel oksimoron” kavramı çerçevesinde incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemleri kapsamında literatür taramasıyla elde edilen yazılı ve görsel kaynaklardan faydalanılarak sanat eseri incelemeleri ve yorumlamaları yapılmıştır. Araştırma oksimoron içeren çeşitli sanat pratikleri ve Turner’ın örnek eserlerinin formalist ve içeriksel analizi ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular, Turner’ın eserlerinde saptanan görsel oksimoronların, sadece alternatif bir anlatım dili ve biçimi yaratmak değil, aynı zamanda estetik kaygı ve metaforik yaklaşım sergileme amacına da hizmet ettiğini göstermektedir.

Oxymorons in Visual Arts: An Examination of the Works of Joseph Mallord William Turner

Öz

As in various other disciplines, contradictions created by juxtaposing opposing elements in the visual arts are expressed through the concept of “oxymoron”, alongside concepts such as “paradox” and “irony”, which possess distinct formal and semantic layers. Oxymorons, which have the power to provoke thought, encourage questioning and create an impact in an emotional context, shift from being purely verbal in art dynamics and manifest as visual elements. Oxymorons, which are present in painting as well as in other visual art disciplines, enrich the narrative and guide the viewer’s perception. This study aims to analyse selected works by the English painter Joseph Mallord William Turner within the framework of the concept of “visual oxymoron”. In this study, artwork analyses and interpretations were carried out using written and visual sources obtained through a literature review as part of qualitative research methods. The study is limited to various art practices that involve oxymorons and a formal and content-based analysis of Turner’s exemplary works. The findings point out that the visual oxymorons identified in Turner’s works serve not only to create an alternative language and form of expression, but also to show aesthetic concerns and a metaphorical approach.
