Örnek olarak, On Dokuzuncu Yüzyıl İngiliz yazarı Thomas Hardy’nin Yuvaya Dönüş The Return of The Native adlı romanı çözümlenmektedir.

Literature, Geography and Space: Hardy’s the Return of the Native

Yıl 2010, Cilt: 50 Sayı: 2, 207 - 220, 01.01.2010

Öz

Taking the Nineteenth Century English novelist Thomas Hardy’s The Return of the Native as an example, this study explores the contingent relations between literature, geography and space. Hardy’s ‘half-fictional, half-real’ Wessex geography is crucial to discuss this relation. Theories on geography and space, mainly the “production of space”, and the views of theorists such as Gaston Bachelard, Michel de Certeau, Henri Lefebvre and Doreen Massey form the theoretical frame of this study. The Return of The Native is studied with a view to understand the effect of geography and space on human life on the one hand, the production and reception of space by each individual in different ways and the relation between fate and geography on the other. Geographic and spatial elements peculiar to this novel and to the novel genre, and the narrative elements that the phenomenon of geography naturally involves form the foundation of this analysis.
