Nonlinear seismic assessment of masonry buildings strengthened with textile-reinforced mortar : Two Case Studies

Öz

This study presents a numerical investigation into the nonlinear dynamic behavior of unreinforced and Textile-Reinforced Mortar (TRM)-strengthened masonry buildings through two representative case studies. The numerical modeling approach was first validated against experimental data from masonry wall specimens, demonstrating reliable accuracy in capturing nonlinear response characteristics such as peak load, displacement capacity, and damage distribution. Subsequently, full-scale nonlinear dynamic analyses were conducted on two masonry buildings with different structural configurations under multiple bidirectional earthquake records. Results revealed that TRM retrofitting significantly enhances seismic performance by reducing drift demands and limiting damage propagation. The effectiveness of the strengthening was highly influenced by the reinforcement configuration: while TRM applied only to external façades provided partial improvement, the configuration with TRM on both internal and transverse walls consistently prevented collapse and maintained drift ratios within acceptable performance limits. These findings underline the importance of strategic application of TRM systems for enhancing the seismic resilience of masonry structures.
