Preservation of Skin Integrity in Heart Failure

Congestive heart failure is an international health problem with its high incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality rates. Congestive heart failure is the most common reason of hospitalization in patients older than 65 and it causes more than a million hospitalizations a year. Patients with congestive heart failure experience a number of complications due to physiopathologic reasons, side effects of drugs, accompanying comorbid diseases and limitations caused by congestive heart failure. Complications in congestive heart failure may be observed as impairment of skin integrity, impairment of circulation, edema, immobility, fluid restriction due to the advanced age of the large part of patients. It is important for healthcare professionals and especially nurses who spend a lot of time with patients to be attentive regarding the protection of skin integrity and create awareness in both patients and caregivers. This review will mention nursing interventions aimed at preventing and decreasing the pressure ulcer that is encountered in patients with congestive heart failure.
