Benliğin Labirentlerinde Kimliğin Yeniden İnşası: Carl Rogers Kuramı Bağlamında Evelyn Skye’ın Damsel Romanı

Öz

Bu çalışma Damsel adlı romandaki Elodie karakterinin anlatı boyunca geçirdiği dönüşümü hem bireysel hem de toplumsal direniş biçimi olarak ele almaktadır. Romanın kurgusu Aurea Krallığı'nın yüzyıllar önce ejderha ile yaptığı bir anlaşma gereği her yıl üç prensesin kurban edilmesine dayanır. Bu çerçevede Inophe bölgesinden seçilen Elodie, geleneksel kurbanlardan biri olarak belirlenir. Elodie kaderine teslim olmak yerine ejderhanın karanlık labirentlerinde verdiği mücadeleyle hem kendi yazgısına hem de krallığın tarihsel düzenine meydan okur. Romanın sonunda, ejderhayı yenmesi ve onun kanıyla metaforik bir birlik sağlaması, Elodie’nin benlik ile ideal benlik arasındaki ayrımı aşarak kendini gerçekleştirme sürecini tamamladığını göstermektedir. Elodi’nin ejderha ile mücadelede sergilediği yaratıcılık ve stratejik davranışları Carl Rogers’ın kişisel gelişim teorisi perspektifinden değerlendirilecektir. Özellikle ejderhaya karşı verdiği mücadelede benlik ile ideal benlik arasındaki farkı aşarak otantik benliğine ulaşma çabası ve kendi potansiyelini fark edip bunu aktif biçimde kullanabilmesi, Rogers’ın teorik çerçevesi ile doğrudan ilişkilidir. Elodie’nin ejderhanın dilini kavrama çabası, mağaranın akustiğini zihninde kodlaması, var olan materyallerle problem çözme stratejileri geliştirmesi ve çevresel ipuçlarını dikkate alarak hareket etmesi; hem fiziksel hem de psikolojik dayanıklılıkla birleşerek Rogers’ın kendini gerçekleştirme teorisindeki ideal birey özelliklerini somutlaştırmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, bu çalışma Elodie karakteri aracılığıyla, bireysel direnişin ve içsel dönüşümün Rogers’ın kuramı ışığında nasıl anlamlandırılabileceğini göstermesi bakımından önemlidir.

The Reconstruction of Identity in the Labyrinths of the Self: Evelyn Skye’s Damsel Through the Lens of Carl Rogers’ Theory

Öz

This research examines how Elodie’s character change in Damsel reflects resistance both within herself and against societal expectations. The plot of the novel centers on the annual sacrifice of three princesses, imposed by a historic agreement between the Aurea Kingdom and the dragon. In this context, Elodie, who comes from the Inophe region, is selected as one of the traditional sacrifices. Refusing to yield to her fate, Elodie challenges not only her own destiny but also the kingdom’s historical system during her struggle within the dragon’s dark labyrinths. In the final stages of the novel, Elodie’s victory over the dragon and her symbolic union with its blood indicate that she resolves the tension between her self and ideal self and achieves self-actualization. Elodie’s creative problem-solving and strategic responses in her fight against the dragon be analyzed through the lens of Carl Rogers’ theory of personal development. Elodie’s effort to bring her real and ideal self together, especially in her fight with the dragon, and her ability to recognize and use her potential, are directly linked to Rogers’ theory. Elodie’s attempts to decode the dragon’s language, acoustic mapping of the cave, creatively solve problems with available materials and act in response to external conditions, alongside her physical and psychological resilience aligns with the ideal traits described in Carl Rogers’ theory of self-actualization. This study is significant for illustrating, through Elodie, resistance and inner transformation in Rogers’ theory.
