Exchange Rate Sensitivity of Participation and Conventional Banks: Evidence from Borsa Istanbul

Öz

This study examines whether participation banks exhibit different exchange rate exposure compared to conventional banks in Türkiye. Using daily stock returns for seven BIST-listed banks over the 2015–2025 period, I estimate a two-factor market model augmented with USD/TRY returns and GARCH-based conditional volatility. The results show that Albaraka Turk, the sole listed participation bank, carries a USD/TRY beta of -0.108, roughly 24% lower in magnitude than the conventional bank average of -0.142. The participation—conventional gap widens during the post-2023 orthodox monetary policy regime. While the interaction terms do not reach conventional significance levels in pooled specifications, the bank-level estimates and sub-period results consistently point toward a lower exchange rate sensitivity for the participation bank. Taken together, the evidence suggests that participation banks’ balance-sheet structure and depositor base partially insulate their stock returns from currency swings. The effect is visible but not large, and it weakens during macro crisis episodes.
