Sphincter development is incomplete in children who are not toilet trained. Therefore, collecting urine specımen for young children is challenging for healthcare professionals and parents. In addition, the urine collection method for children can be painful. Although there are recommendations from professional organizations regarding urine collection methods, current practices will also help to eliminate the complexity of this diagnostic process. The advantages and disadvantages of the pediatric nurse should be considered in the selection of the appropriate technique and the collection of the urine specımen, and should fulfill their roles and responsibilities. In this review, traditional and current urine collection methods are summarized by supporting the studies in the literature.
