ABSTRACT
Objective: Children diagnosed with cancer experience many distressing symptoms due to their illness and current treatments. The aim of this study is to examine the symptoms experienced by children aged 8-18 years receiving cancer treatment.
Methods: Data were collected using the sociodemographic questionnaire and the Pediatric Patient Symptom Screening Tool (SSPedi). In descriptive statistics, number, percentage, mean and standard deviation were calculated. In order to examine the relationship between sociodemographic data and SSPedi scale score, Mann Whitney U test was used in independent paired group comparisons and Kruskal Wallis test was used in more than two groups.
Results: Research findings consist of data obtained from 137 children aged 8-18 years. It was statistically determined that children who received steroid treatment and relapsed experienced more symptoms. The most disturbing symptoms are “feeling disappointed or sad” (76.6%), “feeling tired” (75.2%), “changes in the appearance of the body or face” (75.1%), and “changes in taste” (73.7%) respectively. A total of seven symptoms were found: "vomiting or feeling as though to vomit" (72.2%), "mouth sores" (64.2%), and "feeling scared or anxious" (62%). According to the results of our research, diarrhea (58.4%) is the symptom that is found to be the least or not disturbing at all. Then, respectively, “problems with thinking or remembering” (29.9%), “tingling or numbness in the hands or feet” (28.5%), and “hurt or pain (other than headache)” (23.3%).
Conclusion: The burden of symptoms experienced by children with cancer is high. Nurses' awareness of the symptoms that bother children should be increased. It has been revealed that more traceability and clinical applications should increase in symptom management.
