ESKİÇAĞ’DA AİLE KÜLTÜ VAKIFLARI VE VAKIFLARIN YÖNETİMİNDE DERNEKLERİN ROLÜ

Öz

Bu makalede, Eskiçağ’da aile kültü vakıflarının yapısı ve bu vakıfların sürdürülebilirliğinde derneklerin oynadığı rol ele alınmaktadır. Antik dünyada “vakıf” terimine doğrudan karşılık gelen bir kelime bulunmasa da uzun vadeli dini ve sosyal hedeflere yönelik bağışlar bu yapıyı oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmamızda özellikle Hellenistik Çağ’a ait olan ve tanrılar ya da kahramanlaştırılmış aile üyeleri için kurulan aile kültü vakıflarına odaklanılmıştır. Diomedon, Poseidonios, Epikteta ve Symmasis gibi bireylerin oluşturduğu bu vakıflar, kült ritüellerinin devamı için belirli fonlar ayırmakta ve bu fonların yönetimini ya ailevi temellere dayanan kült derneklerine ya da meslekî derneklere bırakmaktadır. Vakıfların yönetiminde yer alan dernekler, phratriai ve kült derneklerinin birleşimini yansıtır. Dernek üyeleri arasında aile bireyleri, damatlar, torunlar yer almakta; rahiplik görevleri genellikle en büyük erkek evlada bırakılmaktadır. Ayrıca, bu dernekler aidiyet, miras ve sosyal dayanışma gibi unsurları da pekiştirmektedir. Makale, aile kültü vakıflarının sadece dini bir pratik değil, aynı zamanda sosyal yapıların ve aile kimliğinin sürekliliğini sağlamak amacıyla oluşturulmuş stratejik kurumlar olduğunu vurgulamaktadır. Ayrıca, devletin veya polisin bu süreçteki yerine ve Roma İmparatorluk Çağı'ndaki uygulamalara da değinilmektedir. Sonuç olarak, aile kültü vakıfları hem bireysel hem toplumsal bellek inşasında önemli araçlar olarak değerlendirilebilir.

Family Cult Foundations in Antiquity and the Role of Associations in the Management of Foundations

Öz

This article explores the structure of family cult foundations in antiquity and the significant role played by associations in sustaining these institutions. Although the ancient world lacked a legal term equivalent to "foundation," long-term religious and social endowments effectively fulfilled this function. The study focuses particularly on Hellenistic family cult foundations dedicated to gods or heroized ancestors. Prominent examples include those established by Diomedon, Poseidonios, Epikteta, and Symmasis, each of whom allocated funds to ensure the continuation of cult rituals. Management of these funds was entrusted either to kin-based cult associations or professional guilds. These associations often combined features of phratriai and cultic groups, comprising family members, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. Priesthood responsibilities were typically passed on to the eldest male descendant. The associations also reinforced values such as belonging, inheritance, and social solidarity. The article argues that these foundations were strategic institutions meant not only to ensure religious remembrance but also to maintain family identity and cohesion amid societal changes. It also touches upon the involvement of civic institutions or the polis in foundation management, as seen in Roman Imperial times. In conclusion, family cult foundations can be considered important tools in the construction of both individual and social memory.
