Education at Robert College from Ottoman Empire to Turkish Republic

Robert College was founded by missionary Cyrus Hamlin and a philanthropist Christopher Robert, in the far distant lands, far away from the America. It developed in a short span of time and became one of the best schools of the Ottoman Empire. When the Empire disintegrated and the new Turkish Republic was established, the College became again one of the best educational institutions in the Balkans and the Middle East. Its reputation continues until today. The rise of the Robert College among the nearly four thousands similar schools was due to its approach to education which concentrates on the development of physical, intellectual and moral aspects of a person. This approach is reflected on the curriculum of the college. This study examines the curriculum in order to better understand the education approach of the College. For this, it concentrates on the duration of the education and types and the hours of the classes. The findings of the study are that, during the Ottoman period duration of the education was long, types of the classes were varied and the hours of the classes were many. Whereas a considerable decrease occurred in all these during the Republican period. This was due in part to the multi ethnic and multi religious character of the Ottoman Empire and in part to the prohibitions of the new Republic towards the foreign schools. In face of these radical changes, the approach and the ultimate goal of the College remained the same, i.e. to educate a person in a way to make him strong in terms of physical, intellectual and moral aspects.

Osmanlı'dan Cumhuriyet'e Robert Kolej'de Eğitim

Amerika’dan uzak diyarlarda misyoner Cyrus Hamlin ile hayırsever Christopher Robert’in kurduğu Robert Kolej, kısa sürede gelişerek Osmanlı topraklarında açılan en iyi okul haline gelmiş, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu yıkılınca, sadece Türkiye’nin değil, Ortadoğu ve Balkanların en köklü ve başarılı okullarından biri olmuştur. Kolej bu ününü bugün de devam ettirmektedir. Kolejin, Osmanlı topraklarında açılan dört binin üzerindeki misyoner okulu arasından temayüz ederek uzun yıllar devam etmesi, öncelikle eğitime olan yaklaşımına bağlıdır. İnsan karakterini fiziksel, zihinsel ve ruhsal bakımdan beraberce ve en ileri düzeyde geliştirme olarak özetlene bilinecek bu yaklaşım, Kolejin ders programına da yansımıştır. Bu araştırmada, tersinden bir bakış açısıyla, ders programı incelenerek eğitim felsefesinin nasıl uygulandığı ve hayata nasıl geçirildiği incelenmiştir. Elde edilen netice şudur; Ders programları, Kolejin de içinde bulunduğu İstanbul ve devletin hızla değişen siyasi ve sosyal şartlarına ile ihtiyaçlarına uygun hale getirilmiştir: Osmanlı döneminde dersler çeşitli, ders saatleri fazla ve eğitim uzun sürelidir. Ama Cumhuriyet döneminin başından itibaren, ders türlerinde, saatlerinde ve eğitimin süresinde aşamalı bir azalma gözlenmiştir. Çünkü kısmen etnik-dini yapı çeşitliliğinin azalması, kısmen de Cumhuriyetin yabancı okullara uyguladığı yaptırımlarla ilgili olarak, yeni eğitim yaklaşımı, değişen şartlar ve ihtiyaçlara binaen ders programını değiştirmek ve duruma uygun hale getirmek olmuştur. Eğitimin, fiziksel, zihinsel ve ruhsal bakımdan tekemmül etmiş insan yetiştirme hedefi tabi ki aynı kalmıştır
