Öz
There are several explanations about the name Kharbanda taken by Ilkhan Öljeitü (1304-1316) in both mediaeval sources and modern studies, but they are far from exposing the real origin and the meaning of this name. The aim of this article is to clarify the origin, the meaning and the reason for Ilkhan taking the name of Kharbanda. First, the explanations about the name in the accounts in the medieval Persian and Arabic sources are presented. Then, modern scholars’ comments related to the name are summarized. Finally, I draw my conclusions concerning the name using examples derived from contemporary sources and revealing the meaning, the origin and the reason for Ilkhan Öljeitü taking the name Kharbanda, which has previously been obscured by the name Khudābanda.
