Selection of Optimum Maintenance Strategy Based on Fuzzy TOPSIS and Fuzzy AHP: An Application in A Food Company

Abstract

Determining the appropriate maintenance management strategy increases the efficiency and reliability of companies, while incorrect maintenance activities significantly reduce the profits and productivity of companies. In today’s challenging competition conditions, maintenance planning activities have an important share of operating expenses. Therefore, it is important to correctly determine the ideal proper maintenance strategy for the survival of the businesses. In this study, it is aimed to select the most appropriate maintenance strategy utilizing fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) and fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) methods for a food company in Turkey. Four main criteria (safety, cost, reliability, and added value), twelve sub-criteria and five alternatives (corrective maintenance, time-based preventive maintenance, opportunistic maintenance, condition-based maintenance, and predictive maintenance) were defined to determine the most appropriate maintenance strategy. The obtained results were compared to each other and then the most appropriate maintenance alternative was selected for the company.
