PERCEPTION OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL:A RESEARCH ON THE SECONDARY SCHOOL 8TH GRADE STUDENTS

Öz

This study aimed at examining secondary school 8th grade students’ perception toward vocational high school and their preferences at these schools. The study was conducted in three secondary schools located in Çanakkale in the second semester of the 2015-2016 academic year. The research sample consisted of 680 students in three different government secondary schools. The Perception Scale toward Vocational Technical Education  (PStVTE) developed by researcher was used for data collection. In the analyses that were made for the internal consistency, Cronbach’s alfa value was estimated as 0.74.The scale that has 15 items totally consists of 4 factors  and the factors explain 54.8% of the total variance. The descriptive survey model was employed in the study. The data obtained in the study were analyzed via the Mann Whitney U-test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, and the X2 test. According to research reslts students have negative perceptions towards vocational technical education. Finally, the perceptions of the students towards vocational technical education varied statistically significantly by relative grade state, level of knowledge on vocational technical education and its departments. Vocational and technical high school preferences differ significantly according to the level of knowledge about gender, vocational technical education and fields.
