Newspaper Coverage of Banditry and its Implication on National Cohesion in Nigeria

Öz

Banditry has emerged as one of the most pressing security threats in Nigeria, evolving from sporadic rural assaults to highly organised, large-scale violence, particularly in the North-West and North-Central regions. Newspapers play a critical role in shaping public understanding of such security crises, influencing perceptions, framing discourse, and indirectly affecting social cohesion. This study examines the nature and patterns of Nigerian newspaper coverage of banditry and explores its implications on national cohesion. Anchored on Agenda-Setting and Framing theories, the research analyses reportage trends, including regional emphasis, identity framing of victims and perpetrators, headline language, coverage frequency, and representation of government responses. Findings reveal that disproportionate regional coverage, ethnically or religiously charged descriptors, sensationalist headlines, and repetitive crisis-focused narratives often deepen distrust in the state, reinforce ethno-regional stereotypes, and heighten fear and social fragmentation. The study argues that unbalanced reportage undermines peacebuilding efforts and weakens the fragile unity in Nigeria’s multi-ethnic society. The study therefore recommends that, balanced and conflict-sensitive journalism, promotion of unity-driven narratives and stronger media regulation to ensure responsible reporting becomes necessary. The paper concludes that, while the media serves as a vital tool for public awareness, its framing of security issues must be handled with sensitivity to avoid inadvertently exacerbating societal divisions.
